A Very High Quality 1984 Amplifier. We've used this as a Reference Amp for a while now, if we don't play it much so time to move it on, as we have with others once we've got the best out of them. Not a typical design, this is a Balanced Design avoiding any grounding on the amp stage, explaining the 'Hot' & 'Cold' labels on the speakers, treat is as + & - in use.
In comparing this with other amps in June 2017, the AUG90X is certainly a capable amp. It does sound different to the 1965-72 era amps, if is a good one to compare to. It has a precise accurate tight sound that you can get very used to & play for hours, we have. It's an amp that needs big speakers to bring it out.
We know the Market isn't ready for a top 1980s amp upgraded like this so it's shown as "What We Can Do" as it's a Reference Amp we refer back to often, especially with post 1976 amps. Buyable as shown, but since first listing Sept 2016 not one has asked about it if others have sold.
UPGRADED July 2017: Fitted Proper 4mm Speaker sockets, the others were Bare Wires only & awkward to use. Fitted 3-core Mains cable. Upgraded to give a Richer Fuller Sound compared to the very detailed but rather Dry original sound, a lot more friendly sounding now. Doesn't match our 1969 Tannoys if will suit later Ported speakers 1975-date if they can cope with 130w.
Upgrades: All Recapped & Upgraded on everything except the 4 main Power caps. Been through this fully upgrading any low spec & dealing with 'spoilers' that all amps have. An experimental amp just to see how good a quality 1984 amp can be. Our Review page tells the full story. The awkward Bulbs on Input Selector are now green LEDs, if using the original parts so it takes about 1 min to fade the LED on turn off.
In High Grade, light marks on the top as typical, but a very presentable clean amp. All works. Power On, light flashes a few times then the Relay clicks on. We fully biased it just recently which is a bit of a job. All ready to go & be sure with 130w this amp plays Loud! Clean & Loud too, to make you forget how loud it is. Easy to use, the only quirk is the Speaker connectors take Bare Wires only, they aren't 4mm sockets. The wire gap will allow 3mm cable ends in & tighten well.
You can read we like the Valve & 1960s Japan-USA sound & this compares very well with them, we have kept this as a reference for a reason. The Sound is different though, it's very precise & clean & Deep Bass is certainly there. To pair it with big 12"+ quality Speakers, rather than 6" bookshelf ones to hear it at it's best. The Phono stage is unusually good, it has No ICs in the audio stages unlike the 99X. We altered the Tone to give a bit more gain at the extremes as it didn't sound like +10dB gain to us, this we have left. Play it set Flat or Tone off, the sound isn't any different. 2 core mains as made, still has the EU plug on which we've just used with an adaptor. For UK buyer, we'll fit a typical UK plug.
A larger sized amp 467mm wide x 160mm high x 381mm deep if 434mm Max Depth inc fittings.
THE AMP ITSELF WEIGHS ABOUT 17KG
