This KR-6160 is the updated version of the 1969 Trio-Kenwood TK-140X that suffered from awkward looks 7 by now the Tuners were always not working. But the 1970 range sorted the Tuner & the other 2 in the range always had good working Tuners. Nicer looks too as you can see.
Please Note we swapped the KA-6000 main amp board for the one that was in this, as it's the same one the TK-140X Mk II uses, the UA1384 board. This involved a huge amount of planning as the wires & Thyristor needed doing right, if now both are working fine. See the close up pics, we did it nicely & all tested working good on Speakers. The KR-6160 with the KA-6000 board that was much upgraded including a new set of Resistors as well as Transistors & Capacitors is no lesser swap, if we liked the unique design of the other board to research on more as it was never used in a Trio amp, only the receivers.
On turn on with Speakers connected, there is a mild brief 'fff' noise, no loud clicking or thump noise, if this does assume you have the Amp turned on with Speakers A, B or C selected else it will make a noise as the Output Capacitors are not connected if set to 'Off'. If you're using it on Speakers you'll have it set on a speaker option anyway, but to explain.
KR-6160 is a great amp, 55w RMS power, a reliable FM/AM tuner that piucks up FM Stereo with ease & the 'stereo' word lighting. AM works fine with the Meter responsive. 2 pairs of Aux are useful for TV & DVD inputs & 2 Phono inputs if one Phono stage, for an idea to use a better turntable or an autochanger together. Decent Phono stage too. This really is one of the best early Trio-Kenwood Receivers before the range got heavily into ICs. Pre Out-Main In loop with a switch to select, so you don't lose the small connector leads earlier models had.
All Recapped & Upgraded on all but Tuner, 10000µf 100v main capacitor. Runs cool & sounds great. Midrange Tone feature helps match to more Speakers. The 2 inpts on the right are for Stereo Microphones using 6.3mm jacks & the Mic Volume is above. We put shielded cable for the Tone Board to switches stage as previously this was just unshielded cable which we thought a bit lacking.
High Grade amp with high grade fascia, no letter loss as the letters are embossed. Just a small chip on the left side of the wood case under a screw, beyond that easily a 9/10 grade. We put LED bulbs in this, the display even with old type bulbs could have done with an extra bulb for a more even display that only shows whem FM/AM selected, if that's how it was made. Fitted with new 3-core mains cable.
Original Speaker screws left as these are useable with the Gold 'McIntosh-Marantz' type blocks as there is a tab to keep them in place plus similarly useable with fork connectors. To fit 3 sets of 4mm connectors can be done as per the Sales Page Connectors info, all 3 sets we can add for an extra £60.
A medium sized amp 426mm wide x 143mm high x 315mm deep if 350mm Max Depth inc fittings.
THE AMP ITSELF WEIGHS ABOUT 10.8KG
